How long is a table knife?
A table knife is typically between 8½” (215mm) and 9¾” (250mm) in length. Ideal for casual settings, it’s a workhorse than can be used with any dish. However, if you’re looking to get a little more specialised, salad forks, fish forks and more are tailor-made for specific dishes, and tend to vary in size.
Why are dinner knives rounded?
Dinner knives have a (surprisingly) rich history, and the mystery of their rounded end stems back to 1637. Prior to this, they tended to have a sharp end, which lead to the unfortunate habit of less refined dinner guests picking their teeth with them. Cardinal Richelieu, a French clergyman, put an end to this distasteful display, however, by banning sharp ended flatware at his table – and thus, the rounded dinner knife was born.
How to clean a stainless steel knife
If cleaning by hand, try to remove any food as quickly as possible. Next, wash with washing up liquid and then hand-dry. This will prevent the build-up of unsightly water marks. Try not to let your table knife sit in water for extended periods either. Instead, dry it off as quickly as possible. This will keep your cutlery rust-free and gleaming from the first to the last time you use it. If using a dishwasher, use as normal but dry as quickly as possible.
